P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Half Marathon

marathon.gifAs most of you know, I’ll be running the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘N’ Roll Half Marathon this Sunday, January 13. It’s finally here! I’ve been running since November and I’m pretty much sick of training so I am really looking forward to actually doing it. The half marathon starts at 8:30 am. However, because it’s a wave start I probably won’t actually cross the start line until about 9:00 am Mountain time (that’s 10 am Central time).

I will be wearing a time chip during the race. If you would like to check and see where I am on the course, you can log onto the website at www.rnraz.com and click the Live Results button located at the top of the homepage. My time will be recorded at the 5k, 10k, 10-mile marks and finish line. My race number is 45119 in case you need it to look me up online. My goal is to finish the race in less than 4 hours…and in one piece! Wish me luck!

Holiday Wishes

Happy holidays everyone! We’re packing our suitcases to take off for Christmas. I’m packing my “lovely” new shirt (thanks Nancy and Robert!) which was more a gift to Jess than it was to me. Note the instructions (printed upside down so I can read them) on the shirt. I’m told that’s all I need to remember.

A Week of Ups and Downs

scott_cohn.jpgLast week was a crazy one around here. It started on a high with a great concert on Monday night. We went to see my favorite singer/songwriter Marc Cohn at the Fox Theater in downtown Tucson. Right when we moved here (before I was employed) I got up early to buy tickets for this show. We lucked out and got seats front and center. The show was absolutely amazing. I’ve only seen him perform once before (don’t get me wrong it was an incredible show then), cohn_cd.jpgbut being right up front really makes a difference. He played a lot of stuff of his new CD, Join the Parade, and many old favorites as well (Walking in Memphis). Then after the show, to make a great evening even better, Marc was out front signing autographs, so we got to chat a bit and take a picture.

If you couldn’t guess, the concert was the “up” mentioned in the title. The “down” came later that night when I had a voice mail on my cell phone from my dad telling us that my grandmother had passed away. She was always so great to her grandkids (she spoiled us rotten!). She was a great lady and will definitely be missed. My brother posted a very appropriate poem on his blog. I made a quick unplanned trip to Iowa at the end of the week for the funeral. Jess was in South Carolina for a business trip so she wasn’t able to go with me. It was a sad trip, but was still good to see everyone, and celebrate what a wonderful life my grandmother had lived. We’ll miss you grandma.

Christmas in the Desert

Even though it doesn’t feel like stereotypical Christmas weather outside (only got up to 58 on Sunday BRRR!), we’ve been getting into the Christmas spirit. We purchased our Christmas tree the week after Thanksgiving. It is Jess’s first real tree (love that pine smell!). Then we had some people over to help decorate. We went with a red and green theme this year. Then this past weekend, we baked and decorated Christmas cookies to take to our various holiday events. My hands still hurt from the little frosting-squirter-thing. We’ve got a ton of photos in the gallery, and in our Flickr account.

13.1 miles

Recently I got this crazy idea in my head to run a half marathon.  For those of you unfamiliar with distance racing, that’s 13.1 miles.  You’re probably thinking that I must be crazy…and you’re probably right.  I will be doing the Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Half Marathon in mid-January.  I have always harbored a secret desire to do a half marathon.  Luckily, I know some people who will be participating as well so I won’t have to go it alone.  So be thinking of me on January 13 as I’m running (and walking, I’m sure) my 13.1 miles!  My goal is to get it done in about 3 and a half hours, which is the amount of time it takes some people to do a full marathon!  (Marathoners…now THOSE are the crazy people).  I’ve been training for awhile now so hopefully I’ll be ready by the time January rolls around.

On another note, our weekends as of late have been filled with picking out tile, carpet, cabinets, countertops, etc. for our new house.  They’ll break ground within a week or so after our permitting has been cleared.  At this point, our house can’t be built soon enough.  Scott and I are pretty much over the apartment life and are ready to move into a house.  I’m sure we’ll have plenty of pictures to post in the near future as our house is built so stay tuned.

Turkey, Cake, and a Roof Over Our Heads

our lotAgain, sorry for the long delay between posts (we’ll try to be better about this in the future!), but it has been a busy month for us. We’ve been slowly looking for a way out of our apartment since we arrived in AZ. It isn’t bad, but it is just a little too small and a little too old for us. So we’ve been hitting up open houses here and there when we’ve seen them in the paper, but that has been pretty hit or miss. I got Jess a “House Buying for Dummies” book for her birthday, and a few weeks back we got ourselves a realtor and jumped into the house hunt for real. She took us around looking at various houses the last few Saturdays for several hours. We saw a bunch of nice places and narrowed it down to a few (one of our favorites had a pool!). Then it came time to make a decision. We had it narrowed down to three places. One was the pool house that wouldn’t need too much work – just some repainting (their color choices were very interesting to say the least). But other than that, the house was great! The next one would need new carpet, and probably new flooring in the kitchens and bathrooms (the bathroom had carpet!), but the price was lower, so we would have been able to do that ourselves. We really liked the layout in that house. Then the third house on our list didn’t quite exist yet. It was new construction. The housing development was in a great area. It was closer for me to get to work, and really close for Jess to get to work (she could probably ride her bike if she wanted). It was a little more expensive, but since it is new construction we’d get to pick out everything ourselves and not have anyone in the house before us. After weighing our options, we decided that a little bit higher price tag was worth it for the new construction, plus the location was the best out of the three houses we liked. So, the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, we signed all the papers and put down some money to get the ball rolling (or rather the cement truck rolling) on a new house. We made some choices, and picked out some options that night along with our lot, so in 6-8 months we’ll have a new house! This past Saturday, we went to the design studio to chose our carpet, tile, cabinets, counters, and window coverings. This coming Saturday, we pick the rest out (paint colors, wiring, appliances, etc.). We’re really excited about the whole process and can’t wait to move again (never thought you’d hear me say that did you?!?). I’ve included some photos in the gallery of the model house based on our floor plan, and our lot (pile of dirt).

thanksgivingIn other news, we enjoyed a nice Thanksgiving holiday… twice. On Wednesday night, we took a trip to Phoenix and spent Thanksgiving with my grandma and grandpa-in-law (:-)). Grandma Jean cooked a wonderful meal for us and sent lots of leftovers home (which I have been enjoying pretty much non-stop since Thanksgiving!). We drove back to Tucson on Thursday afternoon since Jess (to her dismay) had to go to work on Friday. I went out and fought the Black Friday crowds to do a bit of Christmas shopping while she was at work. Then, after Jess got home from work, we celebrated National Cake Day (my family’s made-up holiday). This was Jess’s first National Cake Day, which entails going out and buying the biggest frosting-est cake you can find the day after Thanksgiving. My dad made up the holiday a few years back with the justification that everyone eats pie on Thanksgiving, making the day after, National Cake Day. Give it a few years, I guarantee everyone will be celebrating this holiday! Then Saturday night we went over the Uncle Robert and Aunt Nancy’s for Thanksgiving number two. Their house was full of family and friends while we enjoyed our second turkey of the week. I love turkey, and would have no problem eating it every day if given the chance (actually, I have been eating it every day). It was nice to see everyone, and meet a bunch of new people. We’ve got photos of both Thanksgiving celebrations with National Cake Day sandwiched in the middle up in the gallery.

Pumpkin Carving

We cut open Gordo (our pumpkin) tonight and ripped out his guts. We also gave him a personality, albeit a somewhat geeky personality. It turns out Gordo had turned to the dark side. As soon as we cut him open we heard The Imperial March start to play, so we knew what he had to be. Maybe next year we’ll get a Yoda pumpkin. We then baked and salted his guts (the seeds) for a nice snack. Jess had never had baked pumpkin seeds before, so we had to give it a try. As usual, check out the photos in the gallery.

Autumn Adventures

Well, it’s a bit warmer here than we’re used to at this time of year… but you could have probably guessed that. We’ve been getting out and about to some of the tourist spots around the area. A few weeks back, we visited the San Xavier Del Bac Mission on the south side of Tucson. It is an old elaborate mission from 1700. Last weekend, we went to our first non-Hawkeye college football game ever (tailgating in 90 degree weather just doesn’t feel right). The University of Arizona Wildcats took on Stanford (what is their mascot? the pine tree?). The Wildcats ended up losing the game in the final quarter. We ended up leaving early though and actually encountered two transplanted Hawkeyes on the shuttle bus back to our car. Then last Sunday we met up with one of Jess’s co-workers and his wife and took a trip to Tubac, AZ to a pumpkin patch. We found a lovely pumpkin (who I named Gordo), and plan on turning Gordo into a jack-o-lantern sometime this weekend.

You can check out photos in the gallery. I’ve updated it a bit to make it easier to navigate. Instead of our three random categories + misc. photos, everything is now sorted by year with new albums showing up near the top.

Pinetop, Arizona

Last weekend Scott, Nancy, Robert and I went to Pinetop, Arizona–a town in the White Mountains about 4 hours from Tucson. Saturday morning we went to a car show and saw some pretty cool cars. Following the car show we spent a while geocaching off of the trails in the area. We had a blast doing the geocaches–it was beautiful weather (sunny and in the 60s) and, most importantly, the geocaches were fairly easy to find. 😉

The view on the drive to Pinetop is absolutely gorgeous. Check out our pictures from our weekend adventure to Pinetop, where it didn’t feel like we were in Arizona.
